In 2023 while looking for a part-time yoga teaching job at a college rec center, I stumbled across a withering group fitness program. No sparkle, no energy, and no logo.
I took the job of Fitness Coordinator, and after being told I was not allowed to help with marketing, I created a daughter brand under UMKC’s, I doubled the participant and class numbers and conducted research to prove it was all working.
However, my biggest hurdle would continue to be get people to care. How do you make college students aware that they get free yoga classes AND get them to come?
Short story long, I leave my fancy-pants agency job, as I see it anyway, where I have mastered the Adobe Suite only to land in a windowless, cubicled, 100-year-old campus rec center office space where I find on the whiteboard at my desk the login to Canva.

I say no thank you, build this guide and then accidentally fall in love with this little brand at a commuter school in Kansas City.

Students love free stuff. I’ve learned not to overthink how to get people in the door. Ask them what they want and give it to them. It’s amazing how many squats someone will do for a free t-shirt.
RooFit Bingo was a stellar promotion and boosted class sign-ups by 20%! It was simple. Everyone gets a bingo card with a class in each box. First eight people to get 5-in-a-row won a RooFit Yeti mug.
In the spring we run the RooFit Race. Students have two weeks to attend as many classes as they can in two weeks for gift cards.
Getting someone to engage with the brand is also about meeting them where they are at. For example, med students love Pilates but we don’t offer classes on their campus. So, we host an annual event called PiLattes where we bring them coffee and a workout.
